Student Behavior Policy
Tardy Policy

SCHOOL BEGINS EACH DAY FOR STUDENTS WITH A FIRST (Mon/Tues/Thurs) OR SECOND (Wed/Fri) PERIOD AT 8:00 A.M. Please adjust your schedule accordingly to make certain your child is on time. It is disruptive to the learning environment to have students coming in late. Also, when class begins at 8:00 and your child arrives late, he/she may miss valuable information and classwork.

Students receive two breaks during the school day - brunch and lunch. These breaks give the students time to go to their lockers, use the restroom, or get food. When these breaks are over, students are given five (5) minutes to be in their classroom or destination and ready to work. There is a one-minute warning bell before the final bell sounds.

Once the final bell has sounded, the halls are cleared of all students who 1) are not in class and 2) do not have a pass from a staff member. These students are taken to the office where they will:

  • be assigned detention for that day
  • call home and tell his/her guardian they were late and that they are serving detention that day after school.

Detention runs from 3:15 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. each day.

Every time a student is late for class under the conditions listed above, they will call home and receive detention.

Students who are chronically tardy may be subject to escalating consequences including, but not limited to truancy abatement contracts, in-house suspension, or suspension from school.

STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE HALLS WITHOUT A PASS DURING CLASS TIME.

After-school Detention

A student may be referred for after-school detention for 1) being late for class or 2) not adhering to school or classroom rules. Any staff member may assign a student an after-school detention. After-school detentions are not served on the same day as they are given unless a guardian contact is made notifying the guardian of the detention.

Detention is held Mondays through Fridays from 3:15 - 4:15 p.m. Students need to report to the AVP office to make up their detention.

If a student misses a detention date, they can still make it up by coming after-school and notifying the staff member in charge.

  • Students who do not make up detentions have their names put on the No Privileges List.
  • Once their name is on the NPL, they are not allowed to attend school rallies, dances, games, or any extra-curricular activities until they have served their detentions and their name is removed.
  • The NPL is updated weekly and posted outside of the AVP office.

In-House Suspension

Students who do not make up their detentions will be put in In-house Suspension for one day when they reach three (3) unmade up detentions. During this time, they will be supervised by a staff member and they must bring work to do.

Students who are in In-house Suspension will have their parents notified prior to the being in detention.

All students will be notified in advance and can make up detentions to avoid having the one-day detention.

Students in In-house Suspension are expected to arrive at school by 8:00 a.m. and will be held until the end of their last class period.

California Education Code

Students who violate the CA Ed Code are dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
