In
the first part of the course, entitled “Language and Culture”, students
explore how language develops in specific cultural contexts, how it
impacts the world and the ways in which language shapes both individual
and group identity. Students will pay particular attention to the role
of language in constructing meaning and understanding of particular
issues in the world. The second
part of the course is entitled "Literature in Cultural Contexts".
Through the close reading of literary texts, students in this course
will consider the relationship of literature to issues at large such as
gender, power and identity.
